Meisner Acting Training
Sanford Meisner’s approach to acting is “living truthfully under imaginary circumstances.”
In the Meisner technique, actors respond to what’s going on in the moment. This allows us let go of preconceptions in order to express ourselves truthfully in the moment. In this way, we are authentic and real on stage.
Actors learn a series of exercises about following our intuition. Exercises are totally improvised and demand only honesty in order to live fully in the moment. We make basic observations in partner work on stage, and build emotional vocabulary to express ourselves. With trust and courage, we follow intuition and have real emotional experiences. We react with authentic emotions in the circumstances of a scene, deeply rooted in reality and truth.
The 2-year Meisner technique training program involves a specific series of exercises that build upon each other. The successful understanding and completion of each exercise is vital to the success of the next. Everyone starts at the beginning and moves through each step, laying basic groundwork for the next semester. Each semester focuses of demonstrating a specific skill set, including repetition and activities (1), emotional preparation (2), characters (3), and relationships & intentions (4), script analysis (5), and
monologues (6). After completing training, actors develop versatility and confidence to carry them into acting diverse challenges.
Sanford Meisner said training means “bringing the actor back to his emotional impulses and to acting that is firmly rooted in the instinctive… all good acting comes from the heart, as it were, and that there’s no mentality to it.”
To obtain a clear understanding of acting based on the principles of Sanford Meisner, and to translate that understanding into practice through various classroom exercises and experiences, culminating in the successful application of the Meisner Method to assigned scene study; and ultimately creating a strong foundation by discarding protective walls and unleashing hidden talents to emerge a more honest person with an instrument ready for a future journey as actors and artists.
Meisner technique is a progressive system of structured improvisations for developing imagination and concentration, stimulating instincts and impulses, and achieving “the reality of doing” in performance. Joanna coaches actors before and after each exercise to tweak their efforts and align focus.
Actors keep a notebook to study themselves as instruments, and to work exercises from one class to the next in an iterative process of trial-error-trial. Rehearsing and studying outside class is required.
